A Great Day and BBQ at RS-Bar Guest Ranch!

Some 150 friends gathered for a barbecue picnic at the RS-Bar Guest Ranch near Pinnacles on Saturday, June 20th, 2009. The votes are in and Pinnacles Partnership's Third Annual Picnic Day was the best yet.
"We are having the picnic outside the monument boundaries for the first time," said Mark Paxton, a Pinnacles Partnership board member. "It's about 17 miles from the entry to the monument at the RS Bar Guest Ranch, an 18,000-plus acre property where California condors have nested and are rearing a chick."
The day included a variety of events, including a barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. at the Guest Ranch; docent-led nature walks and birding expeditions; as well as a chance to view the nesting site for the condors. The birds are the first pair in at least 70 years to breed in the wild near Pinnacles National Monument, and it is the first documented pair to rear a bird in 110 years. Lodging is available on site and there will be a star party at dusk.
Pinnacles staff and volunteers gave demontrations about the condor recovery project, the area's plant and bird communities, watercolor painting and geology. Geologist Phil Stoffer even discovered a rocky outcropping adjacent to our picnic area that was stuffed with marine fossils!
Partnership board President Tim Regan presided over the barbecue, delivering chicken, ribs and hotdogs that accompanied a table groaning under the weight of other treats.
More than 60 visitors made the trip into the back of the ranch to view a California Condor chick in its nest. Many more visitors viewed a video short about the San Benito nest. Fifty-five people remained for dinner, and many of them joined a star party where astronomers trained their telescopes on unimagined wonders above. The next day featured a preview screening of an episode of "Native Voices," that was filmed at Pinnacles.
In June 2009, the Pinnacles campground delivers a day of BBQ,
nature eduacation and family fun!
